Coaches

Coaching minor hockey can be a rewarding experience for both the coach and for the children. New coaches, trainers, and managers should be aware that proper certification is required before you are allowed to coach, train, or manage in the KDMHA. For a list of all required certifications please consult the KDMHA Coaching Certification Requirements which is inline with the ODHA coaching requirements.

Organizing Special Events

If coaches wish to organize extra curricular events outside of normal ice times, like off-ice practices or team social events, they should fill-in and submit an event request form as a PDF or event request form as a Word document. The form will extend the association's insurance to cover the event should anything happen. Forms should be submitted 72 hours prior to the event so that they can be processed in a timely manner.

Volunteer Screening Information Help

All coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and team managers are required to submit an updated security screening form every season. Please note that KDMHA will accept screening applications recently completed for other volunteer associations with children under the age of 18 (e.g., soccer, baseball, lacrosse, etc.) – the screening results must be dated May 1, 2011 or more recent to qualify for the 2011/12 season.

  1. Complete the Volunteer/Applicant Screening Process form (form LE220E).
  2. Complete the six asterisked sections on the Request for Vulnerable Sector Check form (form LE225 Aug 2010).
  3. Drop-off at the North Grenville OPP detachment – 8:30 am-4:00 pm. Typical turnaround time is about one week. For those that can’t drop-in to the OPP during regular hours, complete steps 1. (include photocopy of id – driver's license, birth certificate, etc.) and 2. above, remember to sign where required, and mail to: KDMHA Screening, PO Box 1633, Kemptville, ON. K0G 1J0. Alternatively, completed applications can be dropped off at 163 Muldoon Road (Bart Millson, KDMHA president, president@kemptvillehockey.com, 258-3399) or 313 Jack Street (Angela Meulenbroek, KDMHA registrar, registrar@kemptvillehockey.com, 258-7834). KDMHA will then take responsibility for submitting your application.
  4. To save the time and effort to pick-up your completed screening, the North Grenville OPP detachment has agreed to release all cleared screenings directly to the KDMHA president, Bart Millson (note that screenings with a “hit” of any activity will not be released – these individuals will have to pick-up on their own). Please include a note with your application if you do not want your cleared screening released to the KDMHA president.

If you have any questions or require help filling in the screening form, please contact the Risk & Safety officer (Eric Lavoie, elavoie1@cogeco.ca or 613-258-9414).

Player Evaluation & Assessment Forms

Download forms that coaches can use to evaluate and assess players. The forms have been developed through the District 1 Coach Mentor program. The use of these forms are encouraged, however not a mandatory duty or responsibility for our coaches to perform.

If these evaluation forms are used, the recommendation is that they be used purely for individual player development information, that KDMHA’s information privacy policy be respected, and that any completed evaluation forms not be retained for any use by Player Selection Committees involved with future seasons.

On-Ice Volunteers

We understand that each year more and more players are interested in volunteering within the KDMHA hockey program. And that some of these volunteers are young adults wanting to collect high school volunteer hours, and/or are looking to take on a different role within hockey. It has become evident in recent years that older Minor Hockey players as well as Junior Hockey Players partake in practices with teams of lower divisions to assist and volunteer within their association.

To provide guidance to our members, while ensuring safe opportunities for our young “helpers”, please download the information sheet below.

    Questions and Answers for Coaches

Q: Who is responsible for mailing in game sheets if the referee has to fill in a referee's game report?
A: In the case of a game report being done, if it is simple and can be done quickly, the referee should do it in the ref room and let the team manager send in the game sheet. If it is a more complicated report, the home team should send the envelope and white copy of the game sheet with the referee who is then responsible for sending it in to Barb Levere. Either way, the home team should bring the envelopes to the arena for all home games, just in case.
Q: What happens when a goaltender receives a penalty for a mouthguard infraction?
A: The mouthguard situation for the goalie is the same as for any other penalty to the goalie. If it is a minor penalty or a 10 minute misconduct, a skater on the ice must serve this time for the goaltender.
